# How to stay consistent

URL: https://gocutline.com/guides/how-to-stay-consistent/

Consistency comes from making the habit small enough for bad days, giving it a fixed time, making progress visible, planning for the days you miss, and reviewing the week. People who decide in advance when and where they will act follow through more often (Gollwitzer and Sheeran, 2006), and tracking progress helps people reach goals (Harkin et al., 2016).

## 1. Make it small enough for a bad day
A 20-minute version you will do beats a 2-hour version you skip.

## 2. Give it a time and a place
"I will train more" fails. "Gym Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 07:00" works. This is an [implementation intention](https://gocutline.com/glossary/implementation-intentions/).

## 3. Make progress visible
A streak, a ticked block, a number going up. [Streaks](https://gocutline.com/glossary/streak/) work because breaking one hurts a little.

## 4. Plan for the miss
You will miss days. Decide now what happens then: the minimum version, planned as a short block ([what happens to a streak](https://gocutline.com/answers/streak-freezes/)). Missing once does not undo a habit; missing twice starts a new one.

## 5. Review weekly
Every Sunday: what happened, what slipped, what changes. [The weekly review](https://gocutline.com/guides/weekly-review/).

## 6. Do it with people
A crew, a partner, a board. Accountability turns "I should" into "they will see".

## 7. Keep score of the right thing
Count hours done, not hours planned.

## In Cutline
Plan the habit as a block, tick it off, and watch the streak. There are no streak freezes, so the streak is real. Join the [Arena](https://gocutline.com/arena/) if a weekly board keeps you going.

## Questions

**How long until something becomes a habit?**
In one well-known study it took 66 days on average, with a wide range (Lally et al., 2010). Missing a single day did not reset progress.
