# How to build a deep work schedule

URL: https://gocutline.com/guides/deep-work-schedule/

A deep work schedule reserves the same block of uninterrupted time every day, usually 2 to 4 hours in the morning, for your hardest and most valuable work. Phone away, messages closed, one task per block.

## Rules for a deep work block
- **Same time every day.** A habit beats willpower. 08:00 to 11:00, every weekday.
- **One job per block.** Decide it the evening before.
- **No inputs.** Phone in another room, notifications off, email closed.
- **90 minutes to 3 hours.** Shorter is hard to sink into; longer gets sloppy. Take a short break every 50 to 90 minutes.
- **A visible end.** Knowing when it stops makes it easier to start.

## Four ways to schedule deep work
| Style | What it looks like | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Daily rhythm | 3 hours every morning | Founders, writers, students |
| Bimodal | 2 full deep days, 3 shallow days | Managers, consultants |
| Monk mode | 4+ hours every day, everything else minimal | Launches, exams |
| Journalistic | Deep work whenever a gap opens | Experienced people with chaotic schedules |

## Example schedules

- **Creator:** editing 13:00 to 15:00 every weekday, filming three mornings. See [Content Machine](https://gocutline.com/templates/content-creator-week/).
- **Student:** study 09:00 to 12:00 daily in exam season. See [Exam Week](https://gocutline.com/templates/exam-week/).

## Measure it
Count your deep work hours each week. It is the number that best predicts what you will ship. In Cutline, give deep work its own category and you will see finished deep work hours every week.

## Questions

**How many hours of deep work per day is realistic?**
Most people manage 2 to 4 hours of real deep work a day. Start with 90 minutes and build up.

**Morning or evening for deep work?**
For most people the morning, before messages and meetings start. If you are sharper at night, block the night, as long as it is the same time every day.
