# Monk mode, explained

URL: https://gocutline.com/glossary/monk-mode/

Monk mode is a self-chosen period, often a few weeks to three months, of intense focus on one goal, with distractions like social media, nights out and scrolling cut out. The term comes from online self-improvement communities, not from research.

## What it means
The appeal is simple: fewer inputs, more time and attention for the goal. The risk is that an all-or-nothing plan breaks the first time life gets in the way. A good monk mode week is strict about focus and kind about recovery.

## How to do it in a calendar
- One goal for the period, written down.
- Daily blocks for it at fixed times.
- Training, sleep and one social block a week stay in the plan.
- Track it daily; a streak makes the period visible.

## An example
See the [Monk Mode template](https://gocutline.com/templates/monk-mode/) for a full week.

## Common mistakes
- **Cutting sleep and people.** They are what keep the focus going.
- **No end date.** Monk mode works as a sprint, not a lifestyle.

## Questions

**How long should monk mode last?**
Most people choose 30 to 90 days with a clear goal and an end date.
